I love getting recommendations too! I prefer either wlw, or no romance at all. I enjoy fantasy and science fiction. My specific likes are: enemies to lovers, unicorns, dragons, wizards, knights, robots, romances with a spaceship, and horses. I prefer queer stories, but I will enjoy straight ones if they aren’t heavy handed on the gender norms. I also really like King Arthur stories so any good retellings or even stories with a King Arthur-esque character are great.
I’m not a fan of nonfiction or horror or contemporary settings or any sort of magical high school. And the delicate woman and bulky man trope drives me to rage. I don’t want to read Sarah J Maas, Colleen Hoover, Neil Gaiman, or Brandon Sanderson.
Some of my favs:
“Inkheart” by Cornelia Funke
“The Voyage of the Dawn Treader” by C S Lewis
“The Last Unicorn” by Peter S Beagle
“A Wizard of Earthsea” by Ursula K Le Guin
“The Hobbit” by J R R Tolkien
Some of the books I am Most Excited To Read!!
“The Archives Undying” by Emma Mieko Candon
“You Sexy Thing" by Cat Rambo
“The Jinn-Bot of Shantiport” by Samit Basu
“Gwen and Art Are Not In Love” by Lex Croucher
“The Adventures of Amina al-Sirafi” by S. A. Chakraborty
"The Game of Kings" by Dorthy Dunnett
"The Bone Spindle" by Leslie Vedder
"A Master of Djinn" by P. Djeli Clark

“I’m Afraid You’ve Got Dragons” by Peter S. Beagle
Here are a few books that you might like:
"All Systems Red" in The Murderbot Diaries Series by Martha Wells is Science Fiction and honestly my blog has a 1000 reasons to read this but they are also all spoilers, so watch out. It is about a cyborg, called a Security Unit or Secunit, who has had a really terrible life in a capitalistic alternate future. It finds itself protecting a group of humans who find themselves out of their depth with a person who they do not yet understand and yet must trust with their lives. This isn't about the humans though because the Secunit calls itself Murderbot and it has a lot of opinions about silly TV and also ridiculous human social rules. Lots of non-human social dynamics and relationships, non-human and human relationships, and the humiliating ordeal of being known. It also has amazing friendships! So much of the series is personal introspection by a character who is So Allergic To Introspection. It's hilarious. My favorite of the series so far is "Network Effect" but you must read these in order. #science-fiction #queer #robots #friendship
"Crier's War" by Nina Varela is Fantasy with lesbians and androids and a very soft enemies to lovers plot. This book is just very adorable and I loved it. I desperately need more robot lesbian books. I was so excited to read this because I needed to redirect my Lesbian!Murderbot/Asshole Research Transport feelings elsewhere. #fantasy #lesbian #robots
The Red Scholar's Wake" by Aliette de Bodard I have not any other books in this series and I am not sure if I wasn't supposed to or not but I loved this book and I will read the others eventually. It is Science Fiction and it has a Lesbian Spaceship AI X Pirate Queen romance so I'm sure it's obvious that I read this because of "The Murderbot Diaries" and it was awesome. It's very much a soap opera, set in space with very dramatic characters and it is so much fun!! #science-fiction #lesbian #robots
"Ancillary Justice" in the Imperial Radch Series by Ann Leckie is Science Fiction about Breq trying to achieve her revenge against the Dictator of the space empire. Breq is not human, and in fact the last remaining Ancillary, AI controlled human body, of the starship Justice of Toren. This is such a wonderful book and a very popular read in The Murderbot Diaries fandom, for very good reason. It explores revenge, identity, friendship, non-human social dynamics and relationships, and living after loss. Also, every character who is a citizen of the space empire goes by she/her pronouns and yes! they do explore how a communally agender society conflicts with the rest of the galaxy, mostly through Breq being very confused about he/him pronouns. It is amazing. Don't look it up, just experience it. #science-fiction #robots #queer #lesbian-kinda-but-also-yes
Wayfarers Series by Becky Chambers is Science Fiction with four books. I recommend it if you want a slow story with really intriguing characters and a thoughtful exploration of human and non-human social commentary. I did not realize that each book is about different people and normally that is my biggest pet peeve but this book series is the Only one that has done that right. They are all loosely connected. Someone from one book is the main character of the next. It has a lot of friendship and relationships which challenge amatonormative assumptions and even textual relationship anarchy. There is also straight up romance as well. It's a mix of a bunch of very different relationships and cultures. #science-fiction #non-human #queer #friendship #aroace-recommended
"Some Desperate Glory" by Emily Tesh is Science Fiction and I think it is a better without knowing what will happen. However, I will say that it has intriguing characters, well written character arcs, and has interesting complicated relationships. #science-fiction #queer
"If You'll Have Me" by Eunnie is a graphic novel that really ruins any other graphic novel for the rest of your life. It has the most beautiful art, it's about lesbians, and it's pink. Really everything you could want. #graphic-novel #lesbian
“The Goblin Emperor” by Katherine Addison is a slice-of-life fantasy. TGE is a coming of age novel about an emperor, the incredibly sweet main character, Maia. I love this book, if you need a break from snarky, sassy, rude, asshole characters this book has very genuinely sweet and determined characters. Being kind and forgiving and honest can be such a difficult choice! Anyway. This book is great but I have seen criticism that ‘nothing happens’ from people who I’m guessing require Marvel Movie laser gun fights in every act. In my (and other people’s) opinion there is a lot going on, but if the lack of guns and stabbing are going to frustrate you then, maybe don’t try it just yet. #fantasy
"Witch King" by Martha Wells is fantasy that explores friendship and belonging in exceptional circumstances. It has a lot of moments that I marked in my copy as a "Main Character Moment" which were so much fun. It really is The Book to read if you want magic and friendship and drama. Also not to betray "The Murderbot Diaries" series but this is like the better written cousin. The only book of it's series published so far, but the ending is so satisfying that I thought it was a standalone. #fantasy #queer #friendship #gay #lesbian
"Raybearer" by Jordan Ifueko is fantasy about a girl who discovers a conspiracy that threatens her life, how special she is, and how to make friends. Not in that order. Tarisari is our protagonist and she learns a lot about herself in this book. There are a bunch of other things going on too, like: royal court politics, impostor syndrome, falling in love (platonic) (and romantic), assassination attempts, fighting for justice, fighting against the monstrous beings that wish to use you as a pawn for their evil plans, and complicated relationships with moms. I kept tearing up as I was reading and I honestly hardly ever do that. There is so much music and love in this book, Ifueko really made something special in this 2 book series. Genuinely. Read this. #fantasy #poc #black-girl-empowerment #straight #background-queer
"The Jasmine Throne" in The Burning Kingdoms Series by Tasha Suri is fantasy set in an India-esque setting. This is honestly required reading when talking about Lesbian Fantasy. Malini and Priya are so romantic and complicated and sensational. Other characters in the series are also very interesting and complex as well, which is really saying something because Malini and Priya are The Most!!! Miss Suri is exceptional at what she does. Third book comes out this year in November!! #fantasy #lesbian
“The Priory of the Orange Tree” in The Roots of Chaos Series by Samantha Shannon is Fantasy with a soft enemies to lovers lesbian romance. These books are really slow but very rewarding. It has dragons and romance and characters who must reach into the depths of their inner strength to continue on through peril. I love it but it is a very slow and descriptive book so be honest with yourself instead of writing a bad review just because it isn't meant to be read in one day. This simply must be savored. It's really a high fantasy epic so it is very different from usual popular fantasy books. #fantasy #lesbian #dragons
“His Majesty’s Dragon” in the Temeraire series by Naomi Novik is fantasy with an alternate history of the Napoleonic Wars with dragons. I’m sure you’ve heard this blurb before. Here is why you do want to read it this time: William Laurence, our human protagonist, is simply so out of his depth. His new best friend is an enormous dragon who he loves dearly and things only get more dramatic and out of hand from there. Temeraire, our dragon protagonist, loves his human captain but he also simply cannot stop getting them, their crew, and everyone in their vicinity into situations. There is so much platonic love in this book, Temeraire and Laurence love each other a lot and they have to learn how to take care of each other through incredible circumstances. There is also very subtly (but not canon) implied gay relationships and then also canon gay relationships. To be clear, none of these relationships are between a human and a dragon. #dragons #fantasy #aroace-recommended
"Green Rider" in the Green Rider Series by Kristen Britain is Fantasy and it is not queer at all but it is one of my favorite 'typical' fantasy books. The main character, Karigan, is awesome and must continually challenge herself against progressively more dangerous foes. This book has a lot of friendship, courage, and learning how to be better at sword fighting. It is a straight romance, but it's a dramatic slow burn. If you have complained about slow burns being only 20,000 words then this is the book series for you. There are 7 main books, each around 500 pages and full of helpful strangers, new magical places, learning more about ancient magic, lots of horses, and poisoned magical landscapes haunted by the dead emperor of eras past. It is both a typical sort of fantasy but also not? I love this series and tbh I'm still reading it over a year later because it is very long and slow paced during some sections of the books. If you want a quick read you will probably end up dnf-ing it. It is Very Engaging but again, very slow sometimes. #fantasy #straight #fairy-tale #friendship #sword-fighting
“Spinning Silver” by Naomi Novik is Fantasy with three protagonists and I don't know how to describe it without cheapening it. It has magic which follows fairy tale rules/aesthetics and a soft enemies to lovers. Literally just read this book. If you wished that people wrote Fantasy like Fairy Tales this is literally for you I swear on my life. Don't look anything up, just trust Mrs. Novik. #fantasy #straight #fairy-tale
"Zhara" in the Guardians of Dawn Series by S. Jae-Jones is Fantasy and so adorable. It's a magical girl book and the story feels just so enthusiastic and charming. I found the main romance of this book to be actually adorable and sweet. There is a lesbian character and tbh I am hoping there is more lesbianism in the following books but its such a good read. It is so casually queer and gender nonconforming. No one is gendered before they introduce their own pronouns and it's literally just so awesome. I'm surprised that Tumblr doesn't talk about this. #fantasy #queer #straight #friendship
"Captive Prince" by C.S. Pacat is Fantasy and the most difficult book I have ever read. If you can get through the first book, it is very rewarding but the shit that you must get through is so honestly fucked up. It has genuinely extremely complex and well-written characters with a very hardcore enemies to lovers. Do not read this unless you are sure you can finish the series. If you can't finish it you will get no catharsis and it will just hurt. There are lists of trigger warnings. Read Them. They are not joking. Now, you totally should read it, the book really earns the romance by the end. However, it is not perfect, and some criticism online is legit, although sometimes people say that it is written to make rape into something sexy and I very much disagree. There is some graphic rape and also implied rape and you are not meant to enjoy it. This is really The Queer Enemies to Lovers book for me and I want a hardcore lesbian enemies to lovers book written to be this rewarding So Badly!! Reading this feels like running an extremely painful marathon and by the end you are having the most insane endorphin rush from your brain resetting afterwards. There are also really cute and sweet and romantic moments in this book but if you want it you really have to suffer I Am Not Joking. #fantasy #gay #sword-fighting
